I actually have the Axon 7 Clear View Folio Case, and really liked it, but it drives me crazy accessing the fingerprint scanner when the case is open, and also while taking pictures. So in that perspective, it isn't all that smart, but I do love it. I like that it turns the screen off when I close it, however it should obey what I have settings on. For example I would prefer that if I want to close the case for just a sec that it remains unlocked, just display off for a minute, instead of instantly locking the phone.

Thank you so much for your feedback. Could you please let us know why you think it isn't all that smart , what specific problems did  you face and  what's your expectation?

  • ironbaybeedollironbaybeedoll United StatesPosts: 4,618 mod

Hello again! If I am using the phone with the case in the on position, and the screen times out /goes into stand by, I have to partially close the case to get to the fingerprint scanner to unlock it again. Also to use the camera, it is awkward hold the case open to take pictures. Yes it does have a clear window, but it gets way to many fingerprints in the course of a day to snap a picture through it.

  • I have zero interest in a smart case.  I use protective cases.  The flap on the smart case gets in the way.  The flap adds another hoop to jump through before i can get access to my phone.

Had one of these on my Ulefone BePro which made it very cool as through the circular window you could have digital or analog clock.  It would also allow you to answer calls displaying caller ID and acted like an mp3 player.  That phone was on first late KitKat early Lollipop.

Personally I don't think I would use one. However for those that would like it, I understand

    1. I'm somewhat interested if it can be used as a kickstand also, so that it might be convenient for watching videos at a decent angle when putting in on the table. Being able to view certain information like incoming calls, messages, some small apps like FB, IG, etc., and camera function would be nice for a smart cover. I remember Samsung, LG, or HTC have some similar to that, where it allows some apps to function within the cover screen.

    2. I would prefer it the obey the screen lock time setting, as one might open the cover and want to use the phone again within a certain amount of time without having to enter in a PIN or fingerprint, etc.

    3. My current phone case is just a simple blue leather or clear silicone case for my iPhone 6S. Main purpose of a case is just to protect my phone mainly from scratches and drops. For a premium case, I think I would prefer leather, but if it's on the budget side, possibly some soft plastic or silicone.

Something similar to the Galaxy Note 7 Flip Case would be interesting for the Axon 7.

I find folio cases extremely annoying. I have tried to use the ZTE case that came with my A7, by can't get past day 1.5.

The main issue is the cover,  what do you do with it when it is open?

#1 I have tried leaving it flap around to the left of the phone,  but then I can only type one thumbed.  I can't stand swiping keyboards as they are about 10% acurate I'm my long term testing, so I type with two thumbs and am quite fast.

#2 if I fold it over it creates an angled layer that also slides around and again makes it hard to type.

#3 Taking pictures is impossible. The cover keeps flopping all over and you can't hold the phone steady.

#4 try putting a phone that is in a folio case in a car mount.  Come on,  try it.   I'll wait while you rip that cover off and throw it out the window.

I work quite a bit in Europe and the Middle East (typing this in Saudi Arabia on my A7) and see the people in these locations using flip covers all the time. I have tried several times and just can't do it.   So for me a smart cover is a stupid idea.

I have always loved folio cases on my phones and tablets, but with the fingerprint scanner on the back I find it is in my way. I am also now using the camera on the Axon7, which I almost never use on phones and again I find it is in my way. I just really love having something to cover my screen with.

  • jabird101jabird101 Cleveland, OH, USAPosts: 225 ✭✭✭✭✭

I agree with the screen cover , that is why I am so frustrated that there are no glass protectors that fit,  and I am even more frustrated that ZTE hasn't sourced one for sale.   Before I bout the Axon I almost pulled the trigger on a Nextbit Robin.   They knew it would be a struggle to get third party accessories for a new phone from a new manufacturer and produced a line just for their phones. The glass protectors cost $20 from them,  higher than MR screen on Amazon,  but it fits.

I called to order a new stock case as mine got stained after I sat it in some red juice/liquor combo at a bar.  Nope not available.

I wanted to order a few plastic screen protectors since my prefered glass were not working out (I ordered and tried just about everything I could find on the aftearket) and nope,  they don't sell the original screen protectors.  I know I can get atermarket ones I'm plastic that fit,  but the pen one seemed better than the ones I have used on other phones from the usual sources.

My suggestion to ZTE,  and I have called and emailed this in as well,  produce some basic accessories first,  then get fancy.  I am even willing to pay a premium to get something that fits and works.

The screen protector issue is the whole reason I even tried the folio.   It just doesn't work for my usage style and tolerance of annoyances for doing basic tasks.

Thank you for your feedback. What's the price range would you be willing to pay for a phone case?

  • hollaphollap United StatesPosts: 8,377 ✭✭✭✭✭✭✭✭

Thin TPU.  5.5 inch screens are big enough to carry around without an Otter Box covering it.  Just enough protection to assist with a small drop if it happens.  And something that has grip.  The Axon 7 feels good but it's slippery.

  • razor512razor512 United StatesPosts: 2,640 ✭✭✭✭✭✭✭✭

I currently do not use a case, but for the times when I do, my main focus is protection.

I have always been weary of using a case that has any kind of flip cover that will come in contact with the display, as they tend to scuff the display of everyone else I have seen using one (mostly users with the Samsung galaxy devices). If I get one, it would have to come with a screen protector to reduce the risk of that issue happening.

Beyond that, I like the idea of a smart case, if they can expand on the functionality o the device, as well as perform some automation to make certain tasks more convenient.

Smart cases are just too Bulky

  • fzrrichfzrrich United StatesPosts: 4,254 mod

I have used similar cases in the past with my HTC M8. I didn't feel I used the features often and didn't like having to flip the case open all of the time. It isn't a horrible design or anything, just not for me. I prefer a slimmer profile case yet protective with a really good grip similar to the Speck candyshell.

    maxresdefault.jpgpc_ip6_cutaway_cs-grip_retina.jpg

I have also used some wallet cases on occasion but not the kind that flip. The leather look is stylish and conveniently holds  a couple of cards while adding minimal protection.

    1. I would definitely use this case for my axon, as long as the price is reasonable (<$20)

    2. I think closing the case should function just like the physical lock button and should lock the screen immediately. It is a very deliberate motion that you would be unlikely to perform accidentally.

    3. I have a circle-windowed flip case for my LG G Flex 2 that is very similar to the case in the illustration except that the back of the case completely replaces the removable back of the phone. Also, the window is completely open, without any plastic to protect the screen. I like the look and feel of the case, and I like that I can still use my phone with the flap closed (LG has its own apps plus an API for other app-makers to use this function). I wish it gave a little more physical protection to the device; if it had a plastic screen over the window, I would consider not using a screen protector on the phone itself.

  • The case looks very interesting and i want own one but i don't have a axon 7 I have a grand x3. I would get an axon 7 if I had the money but sadly I don't.

protection I'm interested in atm are glass screen protectors and bumpers. The TPU case that came in the box is still looking out for me .

    Make it happen ZTE.

    Sorry for the late response.

I have somewhat interest in smart case. The reason is very simple Ambient Display on Nexus and Motorola phones and Always ON display on Samsung, and LG phones. Ambient Display on Nexus phone works fantastic and it works 97% time. I am happy with Ambient Display and at some point would like to  try out Always ON. Smart Case is same as Ambient Display, so why not implement Ambient Display in Axon phones. Axon 7 has AMOLED Display, and the ambient display will work; and it is just matter of implementation by ZTE developers.

  • We would like to know

    1. If you are interested in a SmartCase, please select one of the options below and leave a comment telling us why.

Cases expand the usability of a device. I'm always looking to get more out of the devices.

    2. Would you prefer to let the SmartCase lock your screen when you close the cover no matter the screen lock time setting or to let theSmartCase obey your screen lock time setting?

I'd like it to lock the screen no matter the time setting, but it should still follow the google smart lock feature so if the phone is still on your body it will not lock. The device would still lock if it were put on a flat service.

    3. Could you tell us more about your current phone case? What’s the main purpose for you to use a phone case? What does it look like? What material is it made from? Why did you choose it? If you could share a photo with us that ould be very helpful.

My current case came with my phone, its a TPU plastic clear bumper case. I typically have gotten otterboxes but the last couple years i've used a folio case and a bumper case.

    My wishes:

    1.  Put the phone in sleep immediately when the case closes and wake immediately when the case opens.  Think how much battery life is wasted by not going to sleep immediately.  My sleep time is set for 1 minute, if I open and close my current dumb cover case 5 times per hour over a 6 hour period, I waste 30 minutes of battery life.  I see ZTE has a smart case, but I hate the window.  Please make a similar case without the window.  I have a Nillkin windowless smart case for my Nexus 5X-it works perfectly and adds little weight or bulk.

    2.  My current axon 7 case:

    image

Made by Vinve available from Amazon-not bad but not smart and could be a little smaller.

    3.  My Nillkin 5X case is perfect-saves battery and has full screen protection and doesn't catch pocket lint.  Picture at  https://www.amazon.com/Nexus-Nillkin-Sparkle-Leather-Function/dp/B01GRVU8BG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1478283101&sr=8-1-spo…
